The Perils of Having a Teenage Daughter

(Hey - There's a surprise for you at the end!)

I actually thought I would have time to do a post yesterday, but I got caught up in one big mess.  You see, I have a teenage daughter, Sarah, and she is 15 years old.  As responsible as she is with her academics, her room is another story entirely.  I can't quite put my finger on this, but does she actually enjoy having her room, her private space, her personal domain, looking as if someone came in and ransacked it?

Raw v. Jpeg - What's Really the Difference? ©

6568 Number 1 JPEGCropped

By Dr. Sheila Cason

If you’re wondering what this whole talk about shooting “RAW” is about, then listen up because I’m about to tell you.

Basically it all comes down to data. When you take a photo, all that your camera grabs is data. If you choose the JPEG  then your camera processes the data automatically inside the camera and saves it into a JPEG format.  When you choose RAW then your camera does nothing with the data and merely hands it over to you.  It’s now left up to your computer to process the data so that you can view the image.

Better? Not quite?

Ok here’s a little more info.

Photoshop and Banner Creation ©

I don't know about you, but I get all excited and happy when I learn something new.  Especially when it is something that I have been trying to figure out how to do for well over a week.  I'm sure you want to know what it is that I've learned how to do that has given me so much thrill today?  Random images.  Hey, it doesn't take much to make me happy, and thanks to Brianna over at TypePad, I'm as happy as if I had a slice of chocolate cake with chocolate fudge icing right about now.

If anybody reading this has a blog or a website, you know that keeping things fresh is important to keeping your audience.  But, as a TypePad blogger, we don't have the luxury of "plug-ins" like you have over at Wordpress.  However, we have a lot of other things that make TypePad great and easy to use once you get the hang of it.   I love TypePad, and know that it has just as many full featured abilities as Wordpress - you just have to pick it apart a bit and learn a few tricks to figure it out.

Big Bear Solutions

Big Bear has not found a job yet, but that hasn't stopped him from finding work.  Does that make sense?  He has been pounding the pavement every day since his lay off on September 15th to find a job.  In the meantime, we have depleted our savings and our retirement is dwindling down to the bottom.  We're not there yet, thank goodness, but it's not far off to the edge of the cliff.

Thank you Hystersisters

On January 22, 2003, I had a total hysterectomy.  I mean I had everything taken out.  Ovaries and all.  Why?  Because I was an emotional and physical wreck, peri-menopausal mess.  For about 2 years prior to my surgery, I had been experiencing intermittent hot flashes and my cycle was a complete disaster.  For almost a year I was having a cycle every 2-3 weeks.  There seemed to be no end to the emotional and physical roller-coaster I was going through.

The Road to 50 is Paved With Good Intentions

There is no way for me to tell you that I've failed at my own good intentions except to just, well, say it.  "I've failed."  Maybe then it will kick me firmly in the butt and wake me up to my own inadequacies.  Such as exercise.  What is it exactly that makes me dread even the thought of it?  Last April, when I turned 49, I promised myself (and others present at the time) that I was going to take this year and get in shape; to change my woeful ways; to burn the bridges of sitting on my butt with my laptop in hand.  And, rather than pounding the keyboard exercising my fingers, I promised I would move my legs, and my arms, my waist, and my hips - and oh yes - my butt too.

Teaching our Daughters About Happiness ©

Just the other day I received a book in the mail, Princess Bubble, from the authors, Susan Johnston & Kimberly Webb.  I love children's books, but this one was different and had a different message for my daughter.  Apparently I am not the only one who thinks so, as Susan was interviewed recently on CNN about her book.

Nothing Gives Me Greater Joy ©

I've been homeschooling my children for 14 years.  Homeschooling does not start at Kindergarten - Homeschooling starts from the day you bring your child home for the first time.  They learn by the examples we set as parents and as teachers.

Valentine's Day Memories

As a small schoolgirl in the 1960s, I think my favorite holiday of all was Valentine's Day.  I had the best time going with my mother to the Five & Dime (a small drug store) and purchasing several boxes of Valentine's cards to hand out to all of my elementary school classmates.

Should Friendships End Because
of a Few Harsh Words?

I recently received an email from a reader who needed some friendly advice.  For any of my readers who do not know, I've always been the one that my friends and acquaintances come to when they need a shoulder, a friend to listen, and some advice.  I've been this person ever since my childhood and you can read more about that HERE.  I call this The Lilly Effect because as a child, I had a grandmother who was the best advice giver ever, and she gave advice with firmness and love.  She didn't mince words either. She told you the truth without being nasty.  She made a lasting impression on me, my grandmother Mama Lill, and so I call this "The Lilly Effect."

Home Interior Before and After - Woo, Finally!

We Have Our Winner! CONGRATULATIONS to ...

It's about dang time I posted these before and after photos of the interior of our home.  It is amazing how something as simple as changing the color of your walls can make a huge difference in the feeling within the room and your home.  Even an artist can struggle with choosing colors, though.  I couldn't decide.  I was a mess.  So, when we went to Sherwin Williams, they had an interior designer who could help us choose the colors that would bring warmth and color to our home.  Her selections were wonderful, and they made a huge difference in our home.

Wind In My Hair and Bugs In My Teeth Pt. 1

So, what do you do on a Sunday afternoon when the weather is perfect?  We go riding.  Not bicycle riding.  Not horseback riding.  Not 4-wheeling.  We go bikin' - on our Harleys.  Unfortunately, I sold my V-Rod 2 years ago because my eyesight is not that great anymore, and, well, I was not throwing my leg over my Harley enough to justify having a 20,000 dollar hunk-a-burnin-love sitting idle in the garage.

The Serious Side of Big Bear

The other night, Big Bear asked me to take his picture for his resume.  Of course, I obliged, and we set up the lights in the family room.  I thought his picture would look nice up against the red wall.  I told him I thought it would be "commanding" and speak "strength" and "Intelligence."  Hey!  I'm an artist, I'm supposed to say things like that!

A White Winter in Charlotte

I love the winter months.  I enjoy staying in my flannel pajamas and fuzzy slippers all day.  This morning we had a rare winter snowfall in Charlotte.  I woke up at 5:15 to the phone ringing.  I dread early morning phone calls because I always think that someone died or was injured.  In this case, though, it was Union County calling to tell parents that schools in the county were closed due to inclement weather.  This may be inclement weather for Charlotte, but if we were still living in Maryland there definitely would have been school today.

Still Working Out the Kinks

See this screenshot?  I still have issues like this.  The text link for "Older Posts" is too close to the top of my video banner.  Stuff like this irritates me terribly and makes my feet cold.  AAAAAACK!!!

Bear with Me

Today and tomorrow I will converting each section of my blog over to Advanced Templates within TypePad and attempting to convert over to my new design - that I created myself!  Woohoo!

I have my left hand plastered up against my cheek and I am stressed out.  Why?  Because last night when I converted my first section (Out & About) over to the new design, it was one big mess.  I had to go into the code and add things and delete things and do things that I didn't even know I had to do.
